January 23rd, 2020

Welcome to 4th week of January, 2020.

My apologies for being tardy with this weeks Colonial News.

The Dover Running Festival is scheduled for June 10, 2020. Please put this date on your calendar and make your plans around serving that day. I’ll ask that everyone participate as they are able please.

Thanks to Mark Allen and Alicia Hollis for their program last week about the scope and type of services provided at Kent-Sussex Industries. The changes in how their services are delivered were an interesting note. They’ve extended an invitation for Colonial members to schedule a tour of their Milford operation.

This week’s program presented by Ryan Quackenbush – Heroes Self Defence Foundation. Ryan came to our attention through a mistake. He presented the HSDF program for another Rotary Club in the area, and posted a thank you note on Colonial Rotary’s Facebook page. So we reached out to him with some education and an invitation to come to Colonial Rotary Club.

Programs assistance please. Members need to take responsibility for at least one program date between now and June 30th. Please sign up now on the speaker list on the clipboard at the check in desk, or by emailing your date preference to Amy Dotson-Newton. Beginning February 15th, I will assign dates.

Thank you

Yours In Rotary Service,

Alex Vaughan, President

Welcome to 3rd week of January, 2020.

Thanks so much to Jeanine Kleimo for the program about the Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing last week. Very informative and I believe it helped our members grasp some of the difficulties the homeless among us have to deal with. I also believe we have an opportunity for a small club service project by volunteering to help feed the men at DIMH sometime in the coming months. Please let me know your thoughts.

We’ve finally broken through the communications logjam between RI, the District 7630 RYLA coordinators, the DHS Interact Club and Dover Colonial Rotary. Earlier this week, we found that RI now has our DHS Interact Club properly registered; I received and forwarded the RYLA registration paperwork to the two Interact delegates from Dover High; and the delegates have received their first information packet from RYLA. This year’s RYLA conference will be in O.C., MD the weekend of February 14th.

The Dover Running Festival is scheduled for June 10, 2020. Please put this date on your calendar and make your plans around serving that day. We’ve begun our publicity this week and have already gotten feedback from the public. I’ll ask that all club members participate as fully as possible please. Mike Petit de Mange will be the committee chair this year as incoming Colonial Rotary president this year. Please don’t hesitate to say ‘yes’ when he asks for your help.

One of the most important parts of Rotary is high quality programming during our weekly meetings. I’ve publicized our need for your assistance with our weekly programming several times recently. I’ve asked all members to take responsibility for finding a program for our future meetings… and, as of this week, only one member has stepped up. We need programs each week, and if there are no volunteers, the only alternative I see is to assign dates that members will be responsible for. I don’t want to do that, but it’s just around the corner. Please sign up for one or two program dates now.

I received an invitation from the Newark Rotary Club to support their 6th annual Beef and Beer fund-raiser on Saturday, March 28th. Details on the flier on each table at this week’s meeting.

Welcome to 2nd week of January, 2020.

Thank you to both Chef Steve at Maple Dale Country Club for making his delicious fresh omelets and Dr. Art Gilbert for putting together the Xmas themed trivia which made our annual Colonial Xmas Follies fun and a wonderful success. You may remember that we use the Xmas trivia as a fund raiser to show our appreciation to our Maple Dale staffers, Waitress Tammy, Banquet Set-up Robert and Chef Steve. This year they divided just over $300 between them.

Having interesting and informative programs is a large part of every weeks Rotary meeting. Amy and Ceil have been doing a wonderful job of finding and coordinating our weekly programs. But we need your help. Beginning this month, you will be asked to help take responsibility for securing a program and coordinating with Amy and Ceil to provide for their presentation to the Colonial Rotary Club. Sign-up is available both in person and through an on-line form.

This week, Jeanine Kleimo from the Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIMH) will be our program presenter. I believe we have an opportunity to be of service to the community DIMH also serves. We look forward to learning more about this ministries history and future challenges.

Alex Vaughan

Welcome to 4th week of November, 2019.

Thanks to Wesley UMC Sr. Pastor Amy Yarnall for last weeks program.

Thank you to those of our Board of Directors who were able, for attending the monthly Board meeting last Wednesday morning. The 2nd Wednesday of each month board members and guests meet for breakfast to conduct the business of the Dover Colonial Rotary Club. Club members are welcome to attend too. Just let the president know if you’d like to attend so we can have a place set at the table for you too and I’ll show you the secret handshake too. (smile)

This week’s program will be presented by one of our newer members, Laura Simpson who, I understand, will be talking about Habitat for Humanity.

No meeting on November 29th in observance of Thanksgiving.

Rotary District 7630 Governor Bill Ferguson will be visiting us on December 6th. All please plan to attend.

December 9 – 13 is our annual Salvation Army Bell ringing service project. The DHS Interact students will be joining us at Redners on Route 8 (Forest Ave.) between 6 & 9PM. If you have not signed up, please do so no later than the 12/6 meeting.
